AEO Services: Answer Engine Optimisation That Gets You Cited

AEO services from The GEO Agency

When someone asks ChatGPT a question in your category, it gives them one answer. Maybe two. Not ten blue links. Our AEO services cover exactly that.

If your business is not in that answer, you do not exist to that customer. They will not scroll down. They will not click through. They will just go with whoever AI recommended.

AEO is how you become the business AI recommends.

What Is Answer Engine Optimisation?

Answer Engine Optimisation is the process of structuring your content so AI tools can extract, understand and cite it when answering questions relevant to your business.

AEO focuses on getting cited in AI answers. GEO is the broader term covering all generative AI optimisation. In practice these describe the same core discipline: structuring content so AI can extract and attribute it.

Where SEO targets Google rankings, AEO targets the answer layer: the responses AI tools generate before a user ever clicks a link.

Zero-click searches now account for nearly 60% of all Google queries. Gartner projects traditional search volume will decline 25% by the end of 2026 as users shift to AI-powered answers. AEO is how you stay visible in that world.

What Our AEO Service Includes

AEO Content Audit

We analyse your existing content and identify which pages are closest to appearing in AI-generated answers: and what is stopping them. Every engagement starts here.

Question Mapping

We build a full map of the questions your target customers are asking AI tools: and match them to your services. These become the foundation of your AEO content strategy.

Content Restructuring

Every service page and blog post should answer one specific question directly within the first 50 to 100 words. We restructure your content using question-led headings with concise 40 to 60 word answers directly beneath them: the format AI systems are trained to extract.

Schema and Structured Data

We implement FAQ schema, HowTo schema, LocalBusiness schema and Organisation schema across your site. Structured data is not a direct ranking factor but it reduces hallucination risk and improves citation accuracy by giving AI engines a clearer signal about what your content covers.

E-E-A-T Signal Building

AI tools only cite sources they trust. We build the author credentials, client testimonials, industry citations and consistent business data that tell AI platforms your business is a reliable, authoritative source.

Ongoing Monitoring

We track which queries your business is appearing in across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and what is changing month on month. Clear reporting, no vanity metrics.

Why AEO Matters Right Now

ChatGPT now has over 700 million weekly active users. Google AI Overviews appear in more than 52% of queries across nine major industries. Perplexity processes 100 million queries per month.

These are not future trends. They are where your customers are right now.

Businesses with strong domain authority and well-structured content often see citations begin appearing in AI responses within 4 to 6 weeks of implementing AEO optimisations.

The businesses moving first are locking in their category. The ones waiting are watching their competitors get recommended instead.

Who This Is For

We work with SMEs across medical aesthetics, financial services, home services, and coaching and consulting.

If your customers are asking AI tools for recommendations in your category: and they are: you need to be the business that comes up.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?

All three work together. None replaces the others.

SEO gets you crawled and indexed by Google. AEO gets your content extracted and cited in AI answers. GEO optimises your wider digital footprint: entities, citations, authority signals: so AI tools trust and recommend your business.

At The GEO Agency we run all three together. Because gaps in any one of them undermine the others.

How answer engines actually decide what to cite

It helps to be concrete about the mechanism, because most advice about AEO skips it and goes straight to tactics. An answer engine does three things in sequence, and a page can fail at any one of them.

It retrieves. The engine gathers candidate sources, either from its training data, from a live search, or from both. If your page is not crawlable, not indexed, or buried far enough down that the live search never surfaces it, nothing else matters. This is the stage most businesses assume they have passed and have not.

It extracts. From the candidates it retrieved, the engine pulls the specific passage that answers the question. This is where structure decides everything. A page that answers a question in one clear passage, near a heading that matches the question, is easy to extract from. A page where the answer is spread across four paragraphs of preamble is not, even when the answer is better.

It corroborates. Before naming a source, the engine looks for agreement elsewhere. A claim that appears only on your own site is weaker than the same claim reflected in a directory, a review platform, a press mention or an industry register. This is why AEO is not purely an on-page discipline, and why sites with excellent content still go uncited.

Work that only addresses one of the three tends to produce nothing measurable. The pages that get cited clear all three.

Five reasons a page never gets cited

These are the patterns we see most often when a site has good content and no citations.

  • The answer is buried. The page answers the question in paragraph six, after the scene setting. Engines extract passages, not whole pages, and the passage they find first is the one they use.
  • The heading does not match the question. A heading that reads “Our Approach” tells an engine nothing. A heading phrased as the question a person actually asks gives it an anchor to extract against.
  • No structured data. Without schema, the engine has to infer what your page is, who wrote it and what organisation stands behind it. Inference favours whoever did not make it guess.
  • Nothing corroborates the claim. The assertion exists only on your site. Nothing independent supports it, so the engine treats it as marketing rather than fact.
  • The page hedges. Copy written to avoid committing to anything gives an engine nothing quotable. Answer engines reward a clear, direct statement far more than a carefully balanced one.

What an AEO agency should be measuring, and how often

AEO without measurement is decoration. The thing that makes any of this defensible is that every claim about your visibility carries a date, an engine name and a saved answer behind it.

  • Named engines, not “AI”. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews are checked separately. They disagree with each other constantly, and an average across them hides the thing you need to see.
  • A fixed question set. The same questions every run, so movement means something. Ad hoc spot checks feel productive and prove nothing, because answers vary between sessions and between users.
  • Verbatim answers, saved and dated. Not a score with no working shown. You can read exactly what the engine said, including the runs where it said nothing about you.
  • The gaps reported as loudly as the wins. The questions where you did not appear are the working list. A report that only shows the good runs is a brochure.

One caveat worth stating up front rather than burying: AI answers fluctuate between runs and between users. A single check is one data point from one session, never a verdict. That is precisely why measurement is repeated on a schedule instead of screenshotted once and put in a deck.

What AEO cannot do

Worth being straight about the limits, because the gap between what AEO is sold as and what it actually does is where most disappointment comes from.

It cannot guarantee a citation. Nobody can, and a guarantee tells you something unflattering about whoever offered it. It cannot make a weak business look strong, because corroboration comes from independent sources you do not control. It cannot work instantly: technical and structural fixes can register within weeks, but shifting what an engine says in an open recommendation question depends on how much independent proof already exists. And it cannot substitute for having something worth citing. Structure makes good material findable. It does not create it.

How the work runs

Start with The Baseline™It covers answer engine performance alongside technical health, reputation, PR and links, and it stands on its own: no plan needed, and our plans carry no setup fee.

You get the honest starting position: named engines, dated answers, saved verbatim, including every question where you did not appear at all. From there you either run the fixes yourself with the priority list in front of you, or we run them. Either way the measurement continues, so you can see whether the work moved anything rather than taking it on trust.

If you are still working out where AEO sits alongside everything else, start with what generative engine optimisation actually is, then GEO vs SEO explained. Frequently Asked Questions

What is Answer Engine Optimisation?

Answer Engine Optimisation is the process of structuring your website content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can extract, cite and recommend your business when someone asks a relevant question. It is about being the source an engine quotes, not just a result a person scrolls past.

How long does it take for AEO to work?

Technical fixes and content restructuring can show up within weeks because they remove a blocker rather than build an asset. Consistent citation patterns across engines usually take three to six months of sustained effort, and depend heavily on how much independent proof about your business already exists.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They are closely related. AEO focuses specifically on getting cited in AI generated answers. GEO is the broader discipline covering every layer of AI visibility, including entity optimisation, schema, content structure, reputation signals and earned media. Most businesses need both, and buying one without the other tends to disappoint.

Do I need AEO if I already do SEO?

Yes, because they optimise for different things. SEO optimises for a ranked list a person scrolls. AEO optimises for a single answer an engine composes, often without showing a list at all. Strong SEO helps you get retrieved, which is a precondition, but it does not make your content easy to extract or well corroborated.

Which platforms do you optimise for?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. They are checked separately rather than averaged, because they disagree with each other constantly and an average hides the gaps you actually need to fix.

Can you guarantee we will be cited?

No, and nobody can. Answers vary between runs and between users, and no agency controls what a model outputs. What we commit to is measurement discipline: the same question set, named engines, dated verbatim answers, and the gaps reported alongside the wins.

How is this measured?

A fixed set of questions run across the named engines on a set schedule, with every answer saved verbatim and dated. You can read exactly what each engine said about you on the day, including the runs where it said nothing. Where something cannot be confirmed it is recorded as not verified rather than counted as absent.

What does an AEO agency actually change on our site?

Usually four things: how answers are structured and positioned on the page, headings rewritten to match the questions people actually ask, schema and structured data so the engine does not have to guess what your content is, and the identity signals that let it confirm your organisation is who it says it is.

Will this work if our content is thin?

Not on its own. Structure makes good material findable, it does not create it. If a page has nothing substantive to say, restructuring it produces a well organised page that still has nothing to cite. In that case the content work comes first.

How do we know it is working rather than just being reported as working?

Because the reporting shows the runs where nothing moved. Every figure carries the date and the engine it came from, the question set does not change between runs, and the questions where you are still absent stay in the report until they are not.
